Site downtime

My apologies for the site being down yesterday. I'm back now and will be posting some new thoughts later.

In the meantime, check out Jay Cross's Top 10 Learning Tools at the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies. I'm going to put together my own list...of which the top ten will consist entirely of Google tools.

Jane Knight's blog
is well worth a look too. As she updates it every day, there's always something of interest no matter what your area.

Yes, when I read that the BBC was releasing the iplayer but that it was only going to be IE compatible I wanted to blog about it. To be honest, I'm surprised there's been such a strong reaction to their inability to release a more widely-compatible version. I think my expectations for the BBC iplayer are so low that really the only surprise was the fact that they don't really know when they'd like to make it compatible for Firefox, Opera et al. Maybe they'll do it sometime next year. Maybe not etc etc.

I'm delighted that they're going to 'hear' our open-source concerns. Is this going to be a hearing much along the lines of BBC Jam, where many staff got upset at anyone who dared criticise the content (although they didn't fix any of it). And when things began to get complicated, the entire service got quickly pulled. And the solution? To come up with new ideas in complete secrecy, with the team who couldn't make Jam work first time around?

Here's another little issue that's niggling at me. The BBC is a publicly funded organisation. We all have to pay whether or not we avail of its services. So why isn't all code produced by the BBC open-source?

I'm on the side of the Guardian here, with their free our data campaign...I want the map data from the Ordinance Survey! Not sure what I'd do with BBC code, but I'm sure there's something usable there ;)
